Annotation

This paper discusses how Moroccan urban Modern Standard Arabic and French are considered as elitist, given their association with public space (education, government, and religion (Modern Standard Arabic)), whilst the 'rural' Moroccan Arabic and Berber are considered powerless and linked to the private (formerly typically female) space. Given Moroccan women's recent mass feminization however and their access to “urban” languages and work, they significantly add to linguistic and social change.
