Annotation

This paper discusses how the introduction of the Latin alphabet in Africa since the turn of the twentieth century, caused the replacement of some earlier scripts, whilst some independent scripts were designed. Only a few languages though have become tools of written communication and learning. The introduction of the Internet has increased the potential for the Latin script as a written alphabet for African languages. It also constitutes a platform for old scripts' (such as Tifinagh and Ajami) revival, and for some of the independent African scripts.
