This paper sets out to explain the actual sociolinguistic situation of the transitional Murcian Spanish dialect, emphasizing its covert prestige characterization, and hence dialect obsolescence in favor of opting for Standard Castilian Spanish, the diffusion structure of this standard, and dialect choice in public settings.
