This paper addresses two fairly similar cumulative cultural evolution parables, one by Tomasello and one by Leontev. Then the paper describes a concrete field of linguistic semiotic research on emergence: language reform, with particular attention to its successful integration in nineteenth-century Hungary. The conclusion presents two paths for further analysis: emergence and cultural shifts and applied linguists' social responsibility.
