This paper explores the use of ideophony in a range of Navajo poetic genres. Drawing on the work of Woodbury, Friedrich, and Becker, it is argued that ideophones strongly resist translation, a fact which becomes more relevant in the perspective of the actual language shift from Navajo to English.
