This article explores multilingualism as a phenomenon which occurs at varying social and cultural stages but is present in multilingual individuals' everyday life, as illustrated by the case of a young Sami boy. Whereas the available languages do position the boy in different ways, he is also free to choose when to use which language as part of his 'languaging' work.
