This article argues that two female testifiers at the Human Rights Violation hearings of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1996, mothers of young pursued activists, employ significant linguistic choices, in particular selected evaluation markers, to express evaluations and to position themselves, the police and their audiences with regard to their narratives.
