This paper examines the metaphors employed to describe President Bush's plan to increase US military forces in Iraq, to investigate the mechanisms through which novel metaphor meanings are negotiated in the political domain. It is shown that, although they may be persuasive in political language, this effect can backfire when they meet resistance.
