Drawing on Lucy's (1993) broad metapragmatics conception, this paper describes a vast set of reflexive elements in criminal trial closing arguments and explores their general underlying sociocultural function. It identifies five types of metapragmatic indexes and examines them in their interactional, situational and societal context. In criminal trial closing arguments these indexes basically indicate that the social actors and practices involved justly belong to the social domain of the law.
