This paper argues that non-activist gay and lesbian Hongkongers' ideology about sexuality explains their rejection of the by activists adopted 'tongzhi' label and their favoring of strategies that leave homosexuality unspecified. It is thus shown how a label's discursive history can both facilitate and hinder its political efficiency. It is also demonstrated that minority group representatives may encounter internal resistance towards the introduction of new labels.
