Annotation

Using Clancy et al. (1996)'s X prior framework, this paper explores similarities and differences in the use of listener responses by Chinese speakers in Chinese Mandarin conversations and by Australians in Australian English conversations, in terms of frequency of use, listener response type, and listener response position with regard to transition relevance place. The results may suggest culturally determined conversational turn taking and politeness practices.
