Building on Leech’s ‘Phatic Maxim’of avoiding silence by keeping talking, this corpus-based contrastive study examines how London and Madrid teenagers employ phatic expressions (such as taboo words, interjections, fillers, hedges…) as politeness device in their everyday interactions.
