Using two peninsular Spanish speech corpora (formal and informal) and drawing on Britz (2004)' theoretical maxims, distinguishing between codified and interpreted (im)politeness, the results of this analysis indicate -contrary to the principles of Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987)-, that the characteristics of the communicative situation may, on occasion, neutralise the codified impoliteness in certain speech acts.
