This paper reports on the usefulness of sociology's new institutionalism in organizational theory for journalism research, arguing that the political and cultural deficits in most of the existing social theories on news are remedied by it. The paper focuses on one version of its applicability to media research, demonstrating how journalism is entangled within the conflicts and values of the broader “political domain” .
