Annotation

This paper explores how ethnic identity in former colonial Africa continues to be discursively serviced in opposition to democratic governance through the analysis of one particular incident, covered by the Times of Swaziland, namely the Swazi monarch's choice of his twelfth bride at the annual Reed Dance and the contestation of this choice by the bride's mother. The analysis identifies contradictions and tensions between the deployment and negotiation of customary and human rights discourses.
