This paper discusses identity discourses and struggles linked with growing globalisation in the modern age on five levels, namely the individual, subnational, national, supranational and global levels. It considers the role of the media, information and communication technologies and the consequences for policy-making within the media and communications sector, especially with regard to South Africa.
