Annotation

This paper explores the factors affecting thematic understanding and plot comprehension of a Kiswahili-dubbed version of an English film. Besides educational level and exposure to Western media, there are other factors that influence comprehension, such as familiarity with the story, exposure to Western accents via work relationships and the impact of single viewing. It is argued that films have an increasing global audience and that there is a clear influence of Western media on non-Western cultures.
