This paper argues that the recurrent preferences of the translators of the 1986 Zulu translation of the Book of Matthew can only be accounted for in terms of certain external, socio-cultural constraints, following Toury's initial norm concept. It is demonstrated that the 1986 Zulu translators of the Book adopted the target culture norms, whilst the 1959 Zulu translators adopted source text norms and culture.
