Annotation

This article explores the linguistic pragmatic rules and the contextualization of obituary notices in Malawian newspapers. Mainly a private affair, the Malawian obituary notices primarily address the deceased rather than the reading public, whilst employing a public forum for their consummation. The notices also contain characteristics from African oral traditions, Christian traditions, and Western traditions, thus mirroring the various sources of modern Malawian experience.
