This study demonstrates how college stepchildren's perceptions of communication with their nonresidential parent are guided by two interwoven contradictions: parenting versus nonparenting and openness versus closedness. These insights can guide both professionals working with stepfamilies and co-parenting nonresidential adults to contribute to the creation of healthy stepfamilies.
