This paper criticizes the role played by the 1986 Memorandum of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences and its constitutive rhetoric of Serbian intellectuals turned into politicians, in the construction of an exclusive, politically charged Serbian identity, rooted in a victimization mythos, that affected early nationalism and mass violence in former Yugoslavia.
