This paper explores cultural dissimilarities in self-reported refusal strategies between Chinese in Taiwan and Americans across four conditions. It was hypothesized that both obligation and relational closeness would define refusals of Chinese in Taiwan, and that the latter's refusal strategies would be less assertive. Various unexpected results based on culture and gender were found.
