This paper explores the effect of qualifying language in direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising on consumer perceptions of drug appeal, anticipated drug usage pleasantness, and estimates of side-effect occurence. Qualifying language appears to exert a profound influence on drug perceptions, in particular when used in combination.
