A discussion of some of the main problems concerning speech act theory, e.g. the analysis of speech act types and sequences, the relation between sentence meaning and the illocutionary force of an utterance, and the performative and referential use of speech act verbs, based on a description of different types of speech acts and speech act sequences. Finally the applicability of the results of this discussion in language teaching is demonstrated.
