Annotation

This article first distinguishes twelve different senses, grouped into four broader classes, in which the terms ‘marked’ and ‘unmarked’ have been employed in 20th-century linguistics. It then argues that an abstract notion of ‘markedness’ is superfluous or ambiguous, and can be replaced by frequency asymmetries or by phonetic difficulty and pragmatic inferences.
