Drawing on thought-provoking 19th and 20th century discussions on the teaching of new vernaculars solely as communicative tools or with further-reaching pedagogical goals, it is argued that foreign language teaching always needs to reflect on the respective culture the language is embedded in and on the general rules and conventions guiding its usage.
