Annotation

This article discusses how the texture of a set of editorials from the London Times and Guardian, bearing on the May 1997 British General Election, can be explained in terms of three representational textural modes, i.e. narrative, description and especially argument. It is further argued that unmodalized assertions often fulfill an ideological role in editorial discourse, and that textural mode blending is very common.
