Annotation

This study explores the variety of uses of the terms 'competence', 'proficiency' and 'communicative language ability' in both linguistic and applied linguistic literature. It is argued that 'competence' ought to be considered in its Chomskyan formulation, whilst 'communicative language ability' ought to be perceived as speakers' skills to employ a language, divided into the components of language proficiency and communicative proficiency.
