Annotation

This paper supports Rampton's (1992, 1993, 1997) view that applied linguistics constitutes a field of enquiry challenging basic linguistic research. It is also speculated that the next main paradigm shift in linguistics may include greater researcher awareness of its ethical, ideological and political implications, thus rapproaching mainstream and applied linguistics.
