Annotation
Taking metaphor as basically a pragmatic notion, the paper applies Searle's model of speech acts to a variety of non-literal uses of language. H. treats reference as the speaker's act of 'directing attention to', and concludes that metaphorical speech involves acts of referring and predicating about both tenor and vehicle.
