I. argues that the cleft conditional in Japanese is comparable to the rhetorical use of the English conditional: it is used in contexts where the speaker wants to refer to an assertion or an existing situation with a sense of indeterminacy. I. claims that this shows that the rhetorical use of an expression in one language can be realized as a distinct form in the grammar of another.
