Annotation

As a point of departure for exploring the challenges of reading and interpreting digital texts, this chapter provides an analysis of the use of the French second-person pronouns tu and vous in French-language hypertext. The results of this study suggest that fundamental differences (e.g., traditional linearity versus multilinearity; frequency and ease of editing) between traditional, printed text and hypertext create an environment susceptible to producing conflicting uses of these pronouns. Pedagogical applications for examining second-person pronoun use and critical framing of various featurs of French-language hypertext are provided as means for promoting electronic literacy and language awareness.
