An examination of the analytical utility of the concept of 'formality' in the ethnography of communication. It is argued that 'formality' incorporates distinct descriptive dimensions a separation of which may facilitate description of communicative events. Topic of investigation are political meetings among Wolof (Senegal), Mursi (Ethiopia) and Ilongots (Philippines).
