This paper examines local and global identity claims of teenage girls in a Cyprus multiethnic middle school, in the context of contradictory ideologies opposing the school’s religious gender discourse on chastity, and the predominant media discourse on female sexuality. It is discussed how they address alternative ideas on agency and gender in a locally disobedient way, challenging traditionalist female roles.
