This analysis of gender-, age- and generation-sensitive compliment and response exchanges among Singapore Chinese during the new year period, reveals how the Singaporean Chinese-speaking community mainly exchange compliments on their children’s socio-economic success, whilst exercising conventional humility through compliment downgrading responses.
