This paper sets out to define an indexical theory of pragmatics that is able to consistently cover referential and non-referential practices and linguistic structure or its metalinguistic matrices. It is argued that social-indexical and referential pragmatics and even grammar are anchored onto discourse, i.e. the deictic center of sociocultural interaction.
