This study explores a Taiwanese bilingual speaker's initiating code-switching practices in three seriously face-threatening telephone interactions. It further shows how code-switching ought to be comprehended alongside notions such as footing (Goffman, 1981) and politeness (Brown and Levinson, 1987), and emphasizes the need of situating the analysis within more comprehensive research on linguistic practices and social interaction.
