Annotation

This paper tests the “Out of Ritual” hypothesis, by exploring especially legal speech acts in various classic and early medieval languages. It argues that indirectness is much older than claimed by the Out of Ritual hypothesis; that it may not have evolved out of ritual language at all; and that anyway, we can't know this from the available linguistic evidence.
