This spoken corpus-based study poposes a rather unitary explanation of the use -namely a response to a negation in the contex- of the contemporary Dutch particle wel. Furthermore wel appears to be interpreted with the strongest meaning compatible with the context, given two conflicting constraints in Optimality Theory.
