This article questions standard assumptions regarding newspaper headline design according to mainly prescriptive pragmatic norms. It focuses on newspaper readers' headline selection and interpretation, using relevance theory. Readers appear to select headlines following relevance expectations and interpret headlines by generating ad hoc concepts and contexts.
