This paper explores the frequency and functions of the discourse marker 'mind you' in British and American English, in spoken and written contexts. Besides its relative infrequency in general and in formal written contexts in particular, the data point to a much wider use in British English. Mind you only operates very infrequently as attention marker, but is mainly used as non-concessive cancellative discourse marker, suggesting unplanned, spontaneous meaning making, often via self-deprecation which fosters interactive solidarity.
