Special attention is paid to the increasing use of 'conclusive must' in negative sentences, the declining use of 'must' and other modals in the main clause of a conditional sentence, the surviving use of past tense 'must' in doubtful cases of 'free indirect speech', and the incipient use of 'have to' in sentences expressing probability.
