This detailed comparative study of the use of requestive modals, substrategies, and their actual pragmalinguistic expressions across different situations, among native English, native Chinese, and Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language learners, demonstrates that some cross-linguistic and interlanguage patterns cannot be explained by the major speech act performing strategies alone.
