This essay deals with deixis. Definitional restictions on the infinite expansion of the class of deictics, allow to arrive at the more or less closed functional categories of person, space, time, discourse and social deixis. Focusing on spatial deictics, the current discussion challenges the idea of a unified category of spatial deictics. The past few years have seen a florescence of studies of deixis. In terms of pragmatic theory, the literature presents a number of different accounts of deictic functions. While the prospect of further work on deixis and typology is exciting, even more promising is the continuing work on deictics in interaction
