Annotation

A rather pragmatic description of multilingualism holds for the majority of multilinguals in the world: they can have a simple conversation in a foreign language, or at least can express themselves as needed. The essay discusses how the integrated nature of the lexicon leads to advantages and disadvantages for bilinguals relative to monolinguals, and argues that language and multilingualism should no longer be considered in isolation from other cognitive abilities.
