This essay discusses how Grice's original theory of conversational logic, based on the cooperative principle, doesn't match our actual understanding. Its incorporation into many fields since its development in the late 1960s, raised news questions, whilst older ones continually need to be reexamined. But it evidently is a vigorous and central aspect of pragmatic theory.
