On the basis of the essential distinction between two modes of arrangement of the linguistic sign, viz. combination and selection, J. distinguishes two types of disorders in aphasic impairment, viz. similarity disorders and contiguity disorders, which he correlates with the metaphoric and the metonymic poles of linguistic utterances.
