Annotation

This contribution to a systematic empirical analysis of the degree to which individuals in various societies are afraid of being laughed at, proposes to take into account the social variables of face, etiquette, shame and embarrassment on the one hand, and power, social status and hierarchy, on the other, as possessing potential explanatory power. This new sort of research affects humor theory.
