Annotation

This paper focuses on Hymes's work on American Indians and narrative, examining the close links among the two, and then addresses his particular contributions to ethnopoetic theory, as documented by refering to a Tolowa (Athabaskan) narrative. It is argued that fundamental questions concerning the text-context relation remain unsolved.
