This paper explores the constitution of sociolinguistic authority and authenticity in media-based entextualization practices, focusing in particular on orthographic choice patterns in transcriptions on the companion websites of large-scale British and American professional media productions on linguistic variation. The specific media entextualization processes are shown to relate to the contrast between expert and lay knowledge, thus widening the authentic-authoritative speaker gap.
